Christopher Coley
Chris is the senior GenAI technical lead for the energy sector within AWS ProServe — Amazon's professional services arm — where he architects and delivers production AI solutions for major global energy companies. He is the technical lead for enterprise-scale agentic AI transformation programmes, GenAI platform builds, and C-suite advisory engagements across the upstream, midstream, and renewables value chains.
Chris's career spans 20 years at the intersection of energy and technology. He began as a drilling engineer with bp, progressing through wells technology roles including wired drill pipe deployments and real-time distributed measurement analysis — work he previously presented at the SPE/IADC Drilling Conference. He later transitioned into data science, working on drilling state detection using machine learning before joining bp venture company LYTT as senior data scientist, applying neural networks to Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data from fibre optic installations in producing wells — using acoustic signatures to detect and characterise downhole fluid inflow locations and multiphase flow behaviour. Returning to bp, he led a team of 15 data scientists in the Upstream Digital organisation before moving to the enterprise platforms group, where he managed teams delivering bp's first implementation of MLOps across AWS and Azure — work recognised with a DevOps Industry Award in 2021.
Today he combines deep hands-on engineering in large language models, agentic architectures, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) with two decades of energy domain expertise. He holds an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bristol.
