Johannes Alvarez is enhanced oil recovery manager in Chevron Upstream’s shale and tight business, where he leads IOR and EOR initiatives for unconventional assets.

Alvarez has more than 23 years of experience in reservoir and production engineering, research and development, asset development, facilities and process engineering, and cross-functional field pilots. Before joining Chevron, he held leadership roles in production engineering and strategic planning at Petróleos de Venezuela SA. His technical work spans IOR and EOR processes in unconventional and heavy-oil reservoirs, and he has authored numerous journal articles and technical papers.

He is a 2025–2026 SPE Distinguished Lecturer, an industry board member for Texas A&M University’s petroleum engineering department, chair of the 2026 SPE Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference, and forum chair for the 25th WPC Energy Congress. He has also served in leadership and technical editor roles for SPE conferences, committees, and journals.

Alvarez holds a PhD in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University, an MSc in chemical engineering from Stanford University, and a BSc in chemical engineering from Universidad Simón Bolívar.
