Nonresident Fellow for Global Energy, Rice University Baker Institute of Public Policy

Dr. Skip York is a non-resident fellow for Global Energy in the Center for Energy Studies at the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. In 2025, Inc. Magazine named him one of the 10 Most Influential Leaders Powering the Future of Energy.


He looks at strategic directions in the energy industry, with specific expertise in global oil and gas asset portfolio optimization and developing viable business models for natural resource companies. He also is the Chief Energy Strategist at Turner Mason & Company, an energy consulting firm, as well as founder of DSC Advising, a strategic advisory firm. Prior roles include Head of Commodity Strategy for BHP, one of the world’s largest mining companies, ExxonMobil, and management consulting with McKinsey & Company, Charles River Associates, and Wood Mackenzie. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Virginia and an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Wyoming. He did post-graduate work at IIASA (International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis) in Vienna, Austria.
